Differences from the First Edition. The first edition of War of the Ring was released by Nexus and published by Fantasy Flight Games in 2004. Nexus went bankrupt and sold the rights for the game to Ares Games. Ares Games made a few changes and prepared the second edition. Basically, they changed a few things fans and critics did not like about I used the Easterling/Southerling Mounted minis as Leaders for the Second Edition as I believe that Nazgul would be more focused on the Hunt for the Ring than generaling an army. They are purchased at the same rate as other leaders.

Embracer Group acquiring Asmodee AND Middle-earth enterprises bodes very well for a War of the Ring digital adaptation. That's very true. We could get an Asmodee Digital version of the game, which would be awesome. Though it would be sad to see the community built up around the unofficial client. Tip.
For what it's worth, I play games like Twilight Struggle, Star Wars Rebellion, Combat Commander, etc. with no problem. I just find all the exceptions and specific call outs in War of the Ring hard to keep track of and explain to a non-regular gaming partner, and the expansions just make this harder. War of the Ring is larger in scale and play time, and in that larger space you get a richer story arc and more complex tempo than in Battle of Five Armies. Whether you're willing to forego that in favor of a more accessible game is up to your personal taste. The rules could probably use a lot of streamlining, especially in the event cards and Hunt for the Ring aspects. I'm all for complex war rules in a war game, but two other complex subsystems seem both unnecessary and distracting from the rest of the game. There's a lot of fat to trim here but that's neither here nor there.
Jacob M. The rules and Event cards often refer to a free region. A region is free for a player when it doesn't contain an enemy Army and/or an enemy-controlled Settlement. A region containing a Stronghold controlled by the enemy is also free for a player when the Stronghold is besieged be an Army of that player." (page 10) All of that said, two of your concerns are real. One, War of the Ring is at its best as a 2-player game. I would not play it 3-player. Second, the rules are detailed and complex. Every time I pick it up after a few months away, I have to refer to the rulebook a few times.
