Ive always wanted to have a crack at swapping the 2.2 (or a 1.8 MPI) for either a Saab B204 or B207 engine. They're both rock solid turbocharged 4 cylinders, they use engine blocks which are similar to the Z22SE which Alfa based the 2.2 JTS on so engine mounts, positioning, bell-housing fitment etc should all be fairly straight forward.
Sensorproblems are not difficult or expensive to fix and the rarer chain problems are not catastrophic like on the previous TS engines. Having owned both 2.2 JTS (5 years trouble free) and the diesel 2.0JTDM (works fine apart from DPF and EGR clogging fairly regularly) I'd say your more likely to have smooth trouble free running on the 2.2JTS.

Hi, I have a '06 159 JTS 2.2 which had it's timing chain replaced 18 months ago (~50k km.) Now the "Check engine" light is back and only getting worse. I checked with Alfa Workshop, and Shane basically told me that, yes, the chain stretches and there's pretty much nothing you can do except replace it.InAustralia, the Brera was sold in two versions; the four-cylinder 2.2-litre JTS 136 kW engine and the top level Brera JTS, a V6 3.2-litre boasting 191 kW. Alfa’s V6 engine is interesting in that it’s based on the V6 block manufactured by Holden in Australia, before being shipped back to Italy for further worldwide on-selling.EngineManagement Light I would advise that you find another example. I have had the same problem on my Brera 2.2. The timing chain has been replaced twice and now the engine management is once again illuminated. The engine management warning light returned after about 8000 miles on both occasions.

Brera2.2 JTS Overheating. Hi All, owner of my first Alfa, bought with problems but beautiful. I bought my 2.2 JTS from a salvage auction, sold as used with no accidents. 4 miles away from the auction house the water temp gauge went through the roof after giving it some welly. In the initial 4 miles it seemed rather sluggish so I floored it
TheJTS engine is direct injection and uses oil, you must check oil every week, otherwise, keep an eye for a replacement engine and it likes the good stuff, fully 32nsM.
